Photography

My goal for the photography was to pay homage to my grandmother's recipes by stylizing and making each dish. After I made each dish, I sent her pictures and then began plating the food. Cooking the food was exhausting, but it was wonderful learning more and more about each recipe.

I ended up creating a total of 34 photos, which you can see below.

In each photo I used a wallpaper backdrop and external lighting to help create consistency. I added my grandma's woven cloths from Guatemala in many of the photos in order to incorporate more colors into the photos. I also feel that the cloths are a nice acknowledgement of the traditional Hispanic culture that many of these recipes pull from.

To stylize the photos, I used accent food like limes, blueberries, lemons, and artificial greenery. Adding these accents helped me bring color to the photo and helped me create movement to direct the eye towards the food I was photographing.

To create consistent color in my photos, I created a preset that added warmth and vibrancy to my photos. The Hispanic culture is all about bold flavors and colors and I really wanted my photos to capture that. With the help of my preset I was able to help the colors of the food and the woven cloths stand out.

Below you can see a few examples of my photos before and after editing. On this page you will also find a full gallery of the photos used in the book.
